JAKARTA, May 8 — No Malaysians have been affected in the eruption of Mount Dukono in eastern Indonesia today, said the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta.
The embassy said it is closely monitoring developments related to the incident, which occurred at 7.41am local time, and as at 3pm, there had been no reports from Indonesian authorities regarding Malaysian citizens being affected.
“Malaysian citizens affected and located near the area may contact the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta at +6281380813036,” the embassy said in an Instagram statement.
According to German Press Agency (dpa), the incident killed three people, including two from Singapore.
As at 4pm, Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) in a statement said 14 hikers had been found safe.
BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre head Abdul Muhari said those found safe included seven Singaporeans — two men and five women — as well as seven Indonesians comprising five men and two women.
Mount Dukono, located in northern Halmahera island in North Maluku province, is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes and has experienced frequent eruptions in recent years.
