SHAH ALAM, May 21 — Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari has called on all quarters, including the Opposition, to stop practising “selective loyalty” by defending the monarchy, religion, and race only when it serves their political interests.
He said many of these individuals ignore these principles when they no longer align with their agenda and remain silent for political reasons when the authority of the Selangor royal institution is undermined.
This was in response to the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj's statement earlier today, emphasising the importance of unity and harmony in a multi-ethnic society, as well as the shared responsibility of all citizens to preserve peace and stability.
"His Royal Highness’s address comes at a particularly crucial time amid growing tendencies by certain quarters to inflame racial tensions, exploit religious sentiments, and manipulate the royal institution for narrow political interests.
"Therefore, all parties, including the Opposition, must cease the practice of selective loyalty by claiming to defend the monarchy, religion, and race only when it benefits their political standing, while disregarding the same principles when they do not serve their own interests," Amirudin said in a statement today.
He reiterated that Malaysia was founded not on racial hatred or religious division, but on mutual understanding, consensus among diverse communities, and the rule of law as the bedrock of the nation.
Earlier, in his Hari Raya Aidiladha 2026 message, the Sultan said that calls for Malay unity should not be misconstrued as hostility towards other races in Malaysia, and that united communities would contribute to a more peaceful and stable nation while fostering mutual respect.
“In conjunction with the upcoming Aidiladha, I also hope that all races and religions in this country will respect one another’s sensitivities and live together in peace and harmony.
“If we continue to be divided and quarrel among ourselves, we will only weaken and disadvantage ourselves," said His Royal Highness
The Menteri Besar also conveyed his deepest gratitude for the address and counsel delivered by the Ruler during Aidiladha.
