SHAH ALAM, April 25 — The Penang government has deferred the decision to carry on the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2026 as planned to Selangor as the host state, emphasising that the final decision must be made with related agencies with consideration for current developments.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said whether the games proceed or are otherwise adjusted depends entirely on the organisers and the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS).
“As Selangor is SUKMA host, it is up to the organisers and KBS to make any decision.
“If the organisers decide to proceed, it remains subject to their consideration,” He said, as quoted by Buletin Mutiara.
Chow said Penang would monitor updates, saying: “I believe the athletes have completed their final preparations, so we will continue to monitor their progress (and make decisions later).”
Previously, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj suggested postponing SUKMA 2026 until the West Asia crisis subsides and the Shah Alam Sports Complex (KSSA) is completed.
Meanwhile, Sarawak said it hopes the Games go on, highlighting extensive preparations athletes have made, including by pursuing training overseas.
Terengganu, Kelantan and Sabah also expressed hope for the tournament to proceed, but on a smaller scale.
Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari said a decision on SUKMA Selangor 2026 would be announced after the SUKMA Supreme Committee meeting on April 30.
