SHAH ALAM, May 26 — The Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) is working with the Gombak Land and District Office to take over more than 70 community halls that are in disrepair or have been abandoned.
The Star reported that its president Shahman Jalaludin said they have identified 73 such halls within the municipality, many of which were built in the 1980s and 1990s by private companies, corporations, and political parties.
“However, some of them are neglected, lack proper maintenance or have been abandoned, which poses safety risks to users,” he said after a full board meeting in Bandar Baru Selayang.
Shahman added that MPS and the Office are currently reviewing the halls’ ownership status and land titles before proceeding with the gazettement and takeover process.
Halls located on state land in villages would likely be placed under the Land and District Office, while those in residential areas would be gazetted under MPS.
Structures on private land would require further discussions to determine the next course of action.
Meanwhile, Zone 5 councillor Nooraimi Hani Ahmad Suhaimi raised concerns over safety issues at several halls, citing a case last year in which part of a ceiling collapsed at a community hall in Taman Selaseh.
“Our contractors found that the ceiling above the office had deteriorated and started to rot,” she said.
Zone 24 councillor Fok Wai Mun also supported the move, saying gazetting the halls would allow MPS to properly maintain the facilities for community use.
