99 pct of projects under NEXTDC’s new AI Factory to involve local firms

SHAH ALAM, May 23 — NEXTDC’s international data centre and AI Factory in Petaling Jaya is set to cement Selangor’s role as a regional digital hub, with 99 per cent of the project’s capital expenditure involving local companies.

State executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han said the involvement of local contractors and suppliers won’t just generate economic returns, but provide hi-tech skills development opportunities in the digital infrastructure sector.

“As AI continues to change the industrial landscape worldwide, Selangor won’t just be an observer, but is building an ecosystem to drive this change.

“This project is more meaningful as local contractors and suppliers are directly involved in high-value digital projects,” he added.

Ng also said the data centre will be built with an emphasis on sustainability, including hi-tech air-cooling facilities to reduce excessive water use.

He explained that the facility has logged a low power usage effectiveness (PUE) score of 1.35, in line with efforts to balance technological development with energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Petaling Jaya meanwhile is rapidly becoming Selangor’s strategic hub for data and AI centres amid increased demand for high-performance digital infrastructure.

Previously, Ng said Malaysia is showing encouraging growth in AI development under various initiatives by the Digital Ministry.
