PETALING JAYA, May 15 — The launch of NEXTDC’s first international data centre and ‘AI Factory’ in Petaling Jaya marks a significant step in strengthening Selangor’s position as a digital economy and artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Southeast Asia.
State executive councillor for investment Ng Sze Han said the AUD$1 billion (about RM3 billion) investment not only develops modern digital infrastructure but also brings substantial benefits to the local economy.
He said RM1 billion of the project’s total investment value was spent domestically, while 99 per cent of its capital expenditure was sourced from local companies and suppliers in Malaysia.
“This approach directly helps train and upskill local contractors and suppliers in high-technology digital infrastructure development,” he said in a Facebook post.

He said the data centre was also built with energy-efficient and environmentally friendly design features.
Ng added that the facility achieved a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rate of 1.35 and uses modern air-cooling systems instead of traditional methods, thereby reducing local water consumption.
He said the launch reflects Selangor’s commitment to balancing technological advancement, economic growth and environmental protection.
“Today we celebrate the launch of NEXTDC’s first international data centre and ‘AI Factory’ in Petaling Jaya, which serves as an important platform for AI development and cloud computing in Southeast Asia,” he said.
