KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — The Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the Royal Malaysian Navy today.
The Navy headquarters said the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, pinned the rank during a ceremony at Istana Alam Shah in Klang.
His Highness' transfer from the Malaysian Army to the Navy Executive Branch was approved by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, during the Armed Forces Council (MAT) meeting, effective November 19, 2025.
“This transfer continues the Selangor royal family’s longstanding association with the maritime sphere and service in the Navy.
“Tengku Amir Shah’s grandfather, the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj, served as the third captain-in-chief of the Navy, while his father Sultan Sharafuddin remains the captain-in-chief of the Navy to this day,” it said in a statement.
Tengku Amir, who previously held the rank of Navy lieutenant, was promoted to lieutenant commander following approval at the 633rd Armed Forces Council meeting, with seniority effective from February 24, 2026.
“The Raja Muda of Selangor has also been assigned to the Naval Volunteer Reserve unit KD Sri Klang,” the Navy headquarters said.
It added that His Highness will undergo comprehensive familiarisation training to gain a deeper understanding of the Navy's roles, functions, and working culture.
The Raja Muda will also undergo ship-handling training and participate in joint exercises involving the RMN and the navies of friendly nations.
Tengku Amir began his military career in 2014 when he underwent officer cadet training at the Army Academy in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, before continuing his training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom from 2015 to 2016.
His Highness was commissioned as a second lieutenant on July 19, 2016, and posted to the 17th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment Para as chief of the Assault Pioneer Platoon.
On April 15, 2017, Tengku Amir was promoted to lieutenant, and on November 19, 2020, to captain.
