SUKMA: State eyes gold in fencing, swimming

SUBANG JAYA, May 19 — Selangor is hoping for gold in fencing and swimming at the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2026, said contingent head Abbas Salimmi Adzmi.

He added that the aspiration is based on athletes’ current performance and the strong commitment they have shown in preparing for the Games.

After earning a gold in fencing in SUKMA Sarawak 2024, Abbas said Selangor is aiming for a stronger performance as host.

“We are seeing very strong commitment from both the athletes and coaching team. I am confident fencing can make a bigger contribution to the Selangor contingent,” he said after meeting state athletes at Elite Fencing Academy here last night.

Abbas said swimming is also expected to be one of Selangor’s biggest gold medal contributors, as the state is widely recognised for producing nationally ranked swimmers.

He said that about 1,800 swimmers were involved in the SUKMA training programme, but the final selection is challenging and requires careful evaluation, and added that 70 athletes are on the waitlist.

He also said several other sports have also been identified as potential gold medal contributors, including silambam, muay thai, wushu and rugby.

Abbas, who is Seri Serdang assemblyman, also announced a RM1,000 incentive for fencers who win gold at SUKMA Selangor 2026.

“I am happy to see that the Selangor fencing team is training in the Seri Serdang area, in addition to the commitment shown by the athletes and coaches. As such, I want to provide an incentive as motivation for the athletes,” he explained.

The 22nd SUKMA will be held from August 15 to 24, featuring 469 events across 37 sports, and will be contested in 52 venues across nine districts. Track cycling however will be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.

Meanwhile, Para SUKMA, which will be held from September 5 to 14, will feature 10 sports and 316 events held in the Petaling and Klang districts.

Selangor is targeting 54 gold medals in SUKMA 2026.
