SHAH ALAM, May 5 — The state is already attracting about RM2 billion in electric vehicle (EV)-related investments and is expanding its charging infrastructure, as it expects EV adoption to grow significantly in the coming years.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the push for EVs is central to Selangor’s transition away from fossil fuels, driven by sustainability and energy security concerns.

“We can no longer depend fully on fossil fuels. Beyond issues of carbon emissions, the environment, and climate change, we are also facing resources that are being depleted year by year.

“The whole ecosystem will change from how vehicles are built and maintained to the supporting industries such as maintenance, repair, and overhaul, spare parts, and other related services,” he said during the launch of the Autotronics Centre of Excellence, the nation’s first Competency Centre for EVs and Solar Photovoltaic Systems, yesterday.

He emphasised the need for supporting infrastructure, skilled workers, maintenance systems, and future battery recycling capabilities to further push the EV industry. Further developments are expected to boost capacity.

“It may not take five years; perhaps within three years, we could see these vehicles make up at least 50 per cent of those on the road,” Amirudin said, adding that the state government will prioritise local talent development in supporting the industry’s growth.

He also announced that Selangor will contribute RM200,000 to further support training and talent development, underscoring the importance of building a local workforce to meet growing industry demand.

Autotronics Centre of Excellence, Malaysia’s first Skills Development Department-accredited EV and solar competency centre, supports the state’s green economy agenda.

The centre offers certified Technical and Vocational Education and Training programmes in EV servicing and solar systems, and has trained over 1,000 EV graduates and 1,500 technicians through industry-linked programmes.

Meanwhile, a RM100,000 scholarship by Yayasan Mahir Malaysia will fund training for B40 and M40 youths to enter the EV and renewable energy workforce.
