Selangor steps up disaster preparedness after Johor tremors

SABAK BERNAM, Sept 1 — The Selangor government will strengthen the readiness of its rescue teams for potential disasters following several mild earthquakes reported in Segamat, Johor recently.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state will consult the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to assess if follow-up measures are necessary.

“So far, reports we received on the tremors in Segamat show they were relatively low in scale, possibly without impact, but it serves as a reminder for us to consult MetMalaysia.

“Fundamentally, we are outside the volcanic and earthquake belt, but the effects can still be felt. This has been recognised since 2006 when the tsunami occurred. We felt the tremors then, but thank God, we were safe,” he said when officiating the Selangor State-level Traditional Village Merdeka Expo 2025 at Sungai Besar Stadium, here, yesterday.

Amirudin said the state’s rapid rescue units are being reinforced with new capabilities, even though earthquakes have not been their primary area of expertise.

“Yesterday, during the National Day parade, we showcased the strength of our rapid rescue unit developed in-house. Although earthquakes were not our area of expertise, we already have floods and landslides under control,” he said.

On a separate matter, Amirudin said the state will allow time for a Form Three student who recently fell from a school dormitory building here to fully recover before police record a statement.

“We will receive daily reports from the Selangor State Health Department and continue monitoring his condition.

“I believe he needs protection and should not be visited too often as this may affect his health.”
