KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — The Education Ministry (MOE) has launched an internal investigation into a possible breach of standard operating procedures (SOP) at a school in Sabak Bernam after a Form 3 student reportedly fell from the third floor of the school’s dormitory today.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek confirmed a police report has been filed to enable a thorough investigation by the authorities.
“The student is currently receiving treatment in hospital. I have instructed a detailed investigation into all aspects of the case, including allegations of bullying. The MOE does not tolerate any form of bullying. Stern action will be taken if the investigation finds that it involved bullying,” she posted on Facebook.
The principal, senior assistant for student affairs, and dormitory wardens of the school have been temporarily reassigned to the Selangor State Education Department pending the outcome of the investigation.
Fadhlina also extended her prayers for the student’s speedy recovery and strength for the family during this difficult time.
Earlier, Selangor police confirmed they had received a report on the incident, in which a male student was believed to have fallen from the third floor of his school’s dormitory at around 2am.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said an investigation paper was opened under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001, with the probe to cover multiple angles including school safety measures, dormitory management, and the social background of the victim and his peers.
“Police are recording statements from witnesses and others. While we are aware of public speculation regarding bullying, it is still too early to confirm,” he said in a statement.
He urged the public to refrain from making assumptions that could disrupt the investigation or distress the victim’s family.
Shazeli stressed that police are committed to conducting a transparent and comprehensive probe into the incident.
According to media reports, the victim sustained serious injuries, including a fractured jaw, brain haemorrhage, and lung trauma, and the family has alleged there was bullying involved, based on the extent of his injuries.
