Illegal baby clam operations busted in separate Selangor raids

SHAH ALAM, May 21 — The Selangor Fisheries Department has foiled two illegal activities involving the possession and collection of baby clams through separate operations in Sabak Bernam and Kuala Selangor on May 16.

The department said the first operation was conducted in a residential area around Sungai Haji Dorani following public information on suspicious activity at the location.

It said the operation, which began at 1.15 pm, uncovered 13 sacks containing materials resembling black sand suspected to be baby clams measuring less than four millimetres.

“However, no individual came forward to claim ownership of the sacks during the inspection,” it said in a Facebook statement.

On the same day, the Selangor Fisheries Department also disrupted illegal baby clam harvesting activity at a jetty in Pasir Penambang, Kuala Selangor.

It said the raid led to the seizure of 31 dredging nets, estimated to be worth RM930, after a group of individuals fled upon noticing the presence of enforcement officers.

The department said enforcement efforts will continue to be strengthened to curb illegal harvesting activities that could threaten the sustainability of fisheries resources and the state’s marine ecosystem.
