SHAH ALAM, Aug 14 — Three more optional sports — muay thai, pétanque and silambam — will be contested in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026, as proposed by host Selangor.

In a statement, the National Sports Council (NSC) said this was unanimously agreed upon by the Sukma Supreme Committee in a special meeting today.

This brings the total number of sports to be contested in the 22nd Sukma to 37, of which 30 are compulsory and seven are optional.

“The Sukma Supreme Committee has also decided that no further proposals or appeals for the inclusion of additional sports will be considered,” the NSC said today.

On August 5, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said two new compulsory sports (boxing and softball) and four additional sports (e-sports, cricket, chess, and kabaddi) will be contested at Sukma 2026.

Meanwhile, the NSC said the Youth and Sports Ministry is looking into hosting a “non-Sukma” for sports not included in the biennial event to ensure the continued development of these sports.

She said the games could take place after Sukma 2028, set to be held in Kelantan.

Sukma 2026 in Selangor will be held from August 15 to 24, while the Para Sukma will take place from September 5 to 14.

On August 10, state executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said e-sports will be an optional event in Sukma 2026, but the state government is pushing for its formal national recognition and regulation.
