PETALING JAYA, June 6 — The improvement of environmental data management and expansion of access to public health services are among the Second Selangor Plan’s (RS-2) main focuses to ensure the more effective and comprehensive implementation of the state government’s policies and initiatives.

State executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said RS-2 was built on lessons from RS-1, especially in efforts to establish more realistic and practical key performance indicators.

“Among the challenges identified are materials and items that are recycled but not officially registered, which complicate efforts to obtain a comprehensive picture of the real amount of materials successfully recycled.

“So we want to strengthen data collection systems so plans and policies can be designed based on more accurate and comprehensive data that reflect the real situation in the field,” she said when met at the Belia On Sungai event here today.

Jamaliah said Selangor is the only state with a specific five-year development plan which facilitates the more systematic and comprehensive planning of progress pathways.

From a public health aspect, she said RS-2 emphasises efforts to expand the people’s access to healthcare services to reduce overcrowding at government clinics.

“We are also giving attention to mental health issues because it is closely linked to physical health and individual well-being. This aspect is becoming increasingly important in today’s society and must be comprehensively addressed.

“Awareness about the importance of mental healthcare must keep being strengthened so the community is more alert to their well-being and are brave enough to get help and early treatment when needed,” she added.

Jamaliah also said the state government aims to expand health screening programmes to more senior citizens, in line with Selangor’s preparations to transition to an ageing society.

She said prevention and early detection must be ramped up to ensure aged residents can enjoy better quality of life and live active, healthy lives.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said RS-2 would be tabled this month, amid current challenges including global geopolitical tensions, energy crises, and world economic uncertainties.

Amirudin said among approaches centred in RS-2 is a mission-oriented development model, which is a chosen approach of renowned economist Mariana Mazzucato.
