'I'd rather die': Son struggles with guilt after father's death

SHAH ALAM, June 4 — Nearly two months after losing the head of their family, the widow and three children of the late Amirul Hafiz Omar are still struggling to come to terms with their loss.

Adding to the family's grief, the couple’s eldest son continues to be consumed by guilt over the tragedy that claimed his father's life.

Amirul Hafiz’s widow, Nor Nadia Abdul Majid, 32, said Muhammad Aqif Amsyar, 9, often blames himself because he believes the accident that killed his father on March 29 occurred while his father was on his way to buy a Mathematics book for him.

“He keeps blaming himself over what happened. He has also admitted that he is no longer happy and that life is not the same without his papa.

“He even said he would rather die. He feels responsible because his father was involved in the accident while attending to his needs.

“However, I always remind him that it was not his fault. The driver of the car involved was responsible for what happened,” she was quoted as saying by BH.

Nor Nadia said the family is still trying to accept the sudden loss of Amirul Hafiz, whose death has left a deep impact on all of them.

“We are no longer the happy family we once were,” she said through tears.

Amirul Hafiz’s widow, Nor Nadia Abdul Majid, speaks to the media at the Rimba Jaya Flats in Shah Alam on April 4, 2026. Her two older sons are inconsolably missing their father, she says.

She said their second child, Muhammad Afif Izz Rayqal, 7, also misses his father dearly and is often reminded of him whenever he sees his father’s belongings.

“There was even a day when my second child asked me, ‘Do I need to pay anything to meet papa?’” she said.

In the March 29 incident, Amirul Hafiz, who worked as a delivery rider, was killed after being involved in an accident on Jalan Raya Barat in Klang.

Following the tragedy, Nor Nadia and her three children, including their youngest, Nur Humaira, 2, decided to move to Perak to be closer to family members who could provide support.

Yesterday, she attended proceedings at the Klang Court Complex involving technician R Saktygaanapathy, 28, who is charged with murdering Amirul Hafiz and taking drugs.

The accused is alleged to have committed the offences at 11.47 am on March 29 on Jalan Raya Barat.

However, no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
