SHAH ALAM, June 3 — The state government is continuing to strengthen its green mobility agenda, with a comprehensive study to identify 500 new locations for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Selangor, expected to be completed by mid-2027.
The Star reported that Worldwide Holdings Berhad's (WHB) new energy head Vivekananthen Sreedaran said the study, which has only recently commenced, is currently five per cent complete and is being accelerated to ensure that EV infrastructure development targets can be achieved.
Every location proposed by the local authorities must undergo a thorough assessment to determine its suitability before charging stations can be developed.
“We need to evaluate each location comprehensively, including its proximity to existing EV charging stations and how WHB can help improve the necessary facilities.
“We also do not want these facilities to be concentrated in only certain areas. Demand in rural districts such as Hulu Selangor and Sabak Bernam is also being taken into consideration,” he said.
Vivekananthen added that the number of charging stations to be developed in each area has yet to be determined, as some proposed sites may not meet the required technical or operational criteria.
Previously, several locations had been identified and proposed by the Petaling Jaya City Council, the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council, and the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council.
He said the electricity supply is also a key factor requiring attention, particularly for the development of direct current chargers, which offer faster charging times and are typically installed in high-traffic public areas.
As a result, WHB is also exploring several alternative solutions, including battery energy storage systems, to address electricity supply constraints at certain locations.
As part of efforts to accelerate EV infrastructure development, MBSA is currently drafting new guidelines to standardise application procedures for installing EV charging stations across all local authorities in Selangor.
Four engagement sessions and focus group discussions have been held with various industry stakeholders, and the findings will be consolidated into a proposal paper for presentation to the Selangor Economic Action Council.
MBSA said that the guidelines will focus on improving application processes, including operational procedures, checklists, rental rates, licensing requirements, and enforcement measures, to ensure EV charging station development is implemented more efficiently and systematically.
However, the new guidelines will not replace the EV charging station development guidelines issued by the Town and Country Planning Department, which have been adopted by Selangor since December 2023.
