WASHINGTON, May 28 — The United States has sanctioned the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, the body Iran established to manage passage requests through the Strait of Hormuz, the Treasury Department said yesterday.
The authority was created by Iran to oversee requests for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran’s control over the strait, a conduit for about one-fifth of the global oil supply, has thrown the world economy into turmoil.
Iran closed the strait after the US and Israel launched their war against Iran on February 28.
The Treasury Department said anyone cooperating with the authority could be considered as providing support to, and receiving services from, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and may face sanctions.
“The Iranian military’s latest attempt to extort global maritime trade is proof that Economic Fury has left the regime desperate for cash,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.
The Persian Gulf Strait Authority last week published a map reaffirming Tehran’s claims to a broad stretch of waters on both sides of the strategic choke point.
