KLANG, May 24 — Upgrade works for sports facilities in Klang ahead of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) are expected to be fully completed next month, with overall progress now nearing 90 per cent.
Klang Deputy Mayor Mohd Zary Affendi Mohd Arif said RM10 million had been allocated to complete the projects and to ensure the best facilities are in place for the seven sporting events hosted in the district.
“For preparations, all local authorities have been entrusted with providing the best sports facilities for SUKMA athletes. In Klang, we expect all facilities to be completed this June.
“Right now, we are almost 90 per cent complete and are carrying out minor works such as painting. Many of the upgrades were completed before Aidilfitri. At the hockey stadium, we replaced the carpet and so on,” he said.
Zary was speaking to the media after officiating the 22nd SUKMA and PARA SUKMA Torch Run Tour programme at Laman Seni Safari today.
Klang is set to host seven sporting events during SUKMA Selangor 2026, including lawn bowls, basketball, rugby, hockey, gymnastics, Muay Thai, and table tennis.
Previously, state executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi announced that 474 medal events across 37 sports would be contested during the games, scheduled from August 15 to August 24.
The biennial Games will utilise 53 venues across nine districts, including public and private higher education institutions, 12 local authorities, and the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, as competition venues.
