MBDK unveils sustainability agenda at World Urban Forum

SHAH ALAM, May 20 — The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) has taken its sustainability agenda to the global stage at the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Azerbaijan, held from May 17 to 22.

In a Facebook post yesterday, MBDK said it is an ideal platform to showcase its innovation in sustainable urban management, smart cities, climate action, and the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The delegation was led by Klang Mayor Dato’ Abd Hamid Hussain and MBDK town planning director Yusrina Mohamad Yusof.

Day one of the forum saw the opening ceremony for the Malaysia Pavilion by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, who is also UN-Habitat president.

“MBDK’s delegation participated in a plenary session with some 30,000 participants from 180 countries to discuss urban mobility and city resilience,” the council said in the post.

On the second day, MBDK said Hamid was invited as a speaker to share best practices in a session titled “Cleaner Rivers For Healthier Neighbourhoods”.

“The mayor highlighted the Love Sungai Klang Action Plan 2035 and detailed its holistic approach to affordable housing to ensure citizens’ well-being,” it added.

On that day, state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim launched MBDK’s Voluntary Local Review (VLR) as a commitment to the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.

“This report serves to solidify Klang’s strategic direction as a smart and low-carbon city,” MBDK said.

Hamid also represented Malaysia as a panelist for the Local and Regional Governments (LRG) Roundtable, where he shared the success of MBDK’s inclusive and structured Zero Squatters Programme, launched in 2000.

“This continuous commitment underscores MBDK’s dedication to transforming the royal city of Klang into a progressive, resilient, and highly sustainable urban hub,” MBDK added.
