SHAH ALAM, May 18 — The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) is not only transforming the learning landscape in higher education institutions, but also pushing university students to improve their skills to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive job market.

Universiti Malaya Media Studies student and social media influencer Sofea Softie said AI has greatly helped accelerate the learning process while serving as a productivity catalyst in her field of study.

According to her, tasks that previously required days of research and reviewing information from various sources can now be completed within minutes using AI.

“AI helps me obtain, filter and analyse information much faster. In my career as a content creator, this technology also simplifies the content production process for my audience.

“However, students should not rely too heavily on AI. We still need to gain experience and sharpen our soft skills so that we can stand out in an increasingly challenging world,” said the certified image consultant.

UM Media Studies student and influencer Sofea Softie says AI has significantly accelerated learning processes while boosting productivity in her field of study.

Sharing a similar view, Pertubuhan Perdana Nasional deputy president Muhammad Mukmin Nusril, 24, said AI has become an important tool in improving student productivity, especially in information gathering, data analysis and academic writing.

He said students are not only expected to acquire knowledge, but must also be able to assess the accuracy and reliability of information generated by the technology.

“AI is not a complete replacement for humans, but rather a tool to help improve productivity. Students need to adapt to this technology and learn to use it ethically and strategically.

“In the future, the advantage will belong to those who know how to make good use of AI, not those who see it as a threat,” he said.

He also reminded students that one of their biggest challenges today is the rapid pace of technological change, which requires them to continuously relearn and upgrade their skills.

Meanwhile, student and celebrity chef Danish Harraz Abdul Hafiz, 19, said AI certainly makes learning and time management easier, but unrestricted use could negatively affect personal development.

According to him, excessive dependence on AI could weaken critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, both of which are essential in producing competitive graduates.

Celebrity chef and student Danish Harraz Abdul Hafiz says over-reliance on AI can weaken a person’s critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

“Students need to discipline themselves and use AI ethically. Technology should not compromise the quality of learning or personal credibility,” he said.

He added that in a rapidly evolving digital era, technical skills alone are no longer sufficient, and students must instead master hybrid skills including communication, digital literacy and adaptability.

Previously, Selangor also stressed that digital talent development and AI mastery among students are important to ensure the state remains a leader in the country’s economy and technology sectors.

Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI group chief executive officer Dato’ Saipolyazan M Yusop said Selangor requires highly-skilled young talent aligned with their respective fields of study to support the state’s future development.

According to him, students must also enhance their value and capabilities to meet the growing demands of industries increasingly driven by AI technology.
