SHAH ALAM, May 17 — Selangor is studying the use of technology and solid waste management systems practised in Bavaria, Germany, to reduce excessive waste accumulation and dependence on landfill sites.

State executive councillor for Islamic affairs and innovation Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said the move is being considered after the state government witnessed the effectiveness of the modern waste management system firsthand while attending the Innovative Thinking, Innovative Technologies, and Innovative Solutions in Environmental Technology (IFAT) 2026 conference in Munich recently.

The visit also provided exposure to solid waste management methods that have successfully reduced waste disposal despite population growth over the past two decades.

"My visit to Munich, Germany recently was to attend the IFAT conference, which is a technology exhibition platform for municipal management focused on environmental protection and solid waste management.

“Throughout the four-day programme, we were briefed by the Bavarian government on how they implemented a waste management system for over 20 years that successfully reduced the amount of waste despite population growth,” he said.

Fahmi was speaking to Media Selangor after officiating the launch ceremony of the Liqa’ Mahabbah for Quran and Fardu Ain teachers in the Petaling district at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah yesterday.

He added that among the approaches implemented were waste separation using four types of bins in every household, special collection systems for electronic waste, and the recycling of plastic and metal waste at more than 3,500 solid waste processing centres serving approximately 12 million residents.

The councillor said that Bavaria currently has around 190 landfill sites, but all materials sent there are processed beforehand rather than being raw household waste.

“There, they do not send untreated domestic waste directly to landfill sites as is still happening in Selangor at present.

“InsyaAllah (God willing), after seeing the sophistication of the technology, we intend to propose to the state government that it be implemented here so that Selangor can achieve what Bavaria has accomplished,” Fahmi said.
