Malaysia passport climbs to 6th in world ranking

SHAH ALAM, May 13 — Malaysia’s passport is now ranked the sixth most powerful in the world, according to the latest Henley Passport Index.

Selangor Immigration Department deputy director of management Redman Safar said the achievement marks a significant rise and gives the nation stronger global recognition and trust.

“This is not something ordinary. Last year we were ranked 12th in the world, but this year Malaysia is in the top six,” he said in a Facebook video post.

According to the Henley Passport Index, Malaysia ranked 12th in 2024 and 2025, before climbing to 6th this year.

Singapore, ranked 1st, is the only Southeast Asian country that sits above Malaysia in the global ranking.

According to the index, Malaysian passport holders can travel visa-free to 183 of 227 destinations worldwide.

Redman added that Malaysians are now finding it easier to travel overseas, enter many countries without a visa, and gain greater respect internationally.

"The Malaysian passport should not merely be viewed as a travel document, but also as a symbol of the country’s strength and standing on the world stage,"

“When we hold a Malaysian passport, remember that it is not merely a travel document, but a symbol of our strength,” he said.
