SHAH ALAM, May 12 — The agriculture sector and sales services have helped Koperasi Hijrah (KoHijrah) Selangor contribute about RM2 million from a total revenue collection of RM7 million recorded last year.

Its general manager, Dato’ Mohammad Syukri Ismail, said the increase was driven by the expansion of local product sales and members’ agricultural produce through various marketing programmes and mobile sales initiatives across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

“The agriculture and sales sector is among the main contributors to the increase in cooperative income following encouraging demand for local products marketed through the Selangor Cooperative Movement.

“This success is further strengthened through the establishment of the Selangor Agro Auction Centre (PLAS) in Kampung Sijangkang, which serves as a collection and marketing hub for members’ agricultural produce,” he told Media Selangor.

He said among the products recording high demand were local vegetables, fruits, fishery products, as well as downstream products such as chicken, eggs and meat.

He added that the local vegetable sector emerged as the largest contributor to cooperative revenue, with product offerings increasing from only 30 stock keeping units (SKU) to 156 SKUs currently.

“The second is fisheries involving local fish, imported fish and freshwater fish, while the third is downstream products such as chicken, eggs and meat,” he said.

He said inland fishery products such as tilapia, catfish and patin also helped increase cooperative revenue as they were marketed more widely through existing sales networks.

According to him, the implementation of joint sales programmes with the state and federal governments, including Cooperative Sales initiatives and programmes under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, has further strengthened local product marketing.

Mohammad Syukri added that KoHijrah is now formulating strategies to expand sales programmes under the Selangor Cooperative Movement, with a target of implementing 86 sales programmes across all 56 state constituencies from June to December this year.

“These sales will be carried out through three methods — cooperative premises, mobile trucks and community markets — to ensure local products reach a wider consumer base.

“So far, KoHijrah has successfully offered 110 SKUs through sales programmes held at cooperative premises, community markets and mobile truck initiatives at various locations,” he said.

He said the Selangor Cooperative Movement not only helps residents access affordable supplies but also creates more market opportunities for active cooperative members producing local goods.

“Out of 11,000 members, about 7,000 are active in these programmes. Members’ income has not only increased by between six and eight per cent, but in the production sector some have recorded increases of up to 10 per cent,” he said.

He added that KoHijrah is targeting the participation of up to 500 farmers and cooperative members this year to further expand local production.

“We want to ensure sufficient supply of downstream products, fresh food and agricultural produce through the cooperative platform and supply chain developed, making it a preferred choice for Selangor residents,” he said, adding that KoHijrah is optimistic of achieving its RM10 million revenue target this year.
