SUBANG JAYA, May 11 — The availability of e-scooters in SS15 has been an effective alternative to private vehicles and has encouraged more people to use public transport, said Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng Mei Sze.
She said the initiative was launched following global fuel price hikes and as a solution to first- and last-mile connectivity between commuters’ homes and LRT stations.
“The considerable distance between homes and LRT stations was a challenge that led to many users still needing private vehicles to reach public transport stations.
“This micromobility pilot project in SS15 is part of a study done with the Transport Ministry (MOT), by collecting data and local residents’ feedback to assess its effectiveness,” she told Media Selangor.
Ng said the pilot received encouraging response with hundreds of commuters riding the e-scooters each week, especially in the central area with three higher learning institutions and LRT stations.
She added that her office is now looking into upgrading existing routes to ensure user safety as micromobility use rises in the area.
On March 18, the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) launched a micromobility pilot project in SS15 to assess (micromobility vehicle) safety, usage and the need for regulation in busy commercial and university areas.
The project, which will end on January 31 next year, includes special parking zones, safety infrastructure, speed limits, and geofencing facilities.
Those who want to ride the e-scooters must register on the Beam app to access the micromobility vehicles.
