‘Selangor to choose high-skilled firms to develop data centres’

SHAH ALAM, May 9 — Selangor will prioritise high-skilled companies to invest in new data centres in the state, said Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation), or MBI, chief executive officer Dato’ Saipolyazan M. Yusop.

“We allow companies to come to Selangor to invest, but based on the strengths of this state, especially in telecommunications, water and energy, some conditions have been set.

“The state government also prioritises high-skilled companies, besides ensuring development plans are concentrated in certain areas so Air Selangor, the Smart Selangor Delivery Unit (SSDU), and telecommunications companies can take follow-up action,” he said at the Selangor’s Future dialogue session in Australia yesterday.

The session, joined by 140 participants, was held in conjunction with the Overseas Selangor Students Convention at Parkroyal Darling Harbour in Sydney.

Previously, state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han said Selangor is prepared to receive new investments in the AI field, especially in data centre development and the comprehensive strengthening of digital infrastructure.

He said the data centre and AI developments and investment will be concentrated in strategic locations like Sepang, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Klang, which each have their own plus points in terms of infrastructure.

When tabling the 2026 Selangor Budget on November 15, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said there is a target for 30 per cent of the data centre industry’s production to be locally made to increase the involvement of domestic companies in the high-impact sector.

He said locally made components would be in server, network and energy efficiency systems.
