SHAH ALAM, May 7 — The Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) is set to expand its Smart Sensor Awareness (SENSA) system to improve road safety at schools, following a successful pilot project that has effectively eliminated road accidents at SMK Puchong Permai.

In a video uploaded on its Facebook page, the council said the initiative developed by MBSJ’s Information Technology Department marks a shift from routine safety measures to a proactive, technology-driven approach to protect students and pedestrians.

SENSA’s pilot project is located along the main road of SMK Puchong Permai, where it frequently saw hit-and-run accidents and motorists running red lights, endangering nearly 2,000 students.

MBSJ said the system addresses these issues by deploying artificial intelligence (AI) cameras capable of recognising pedestrians in real-time, triggering integrated audio-visual warnings, loudspeakers and LED light bars to alert incoming motorists.

Bukit Puchong police station’s Operations division head Jaafar Abdullah confirmed that no accidents have been recorded in the area this year since the system’s implementation.

“The police can monitor the SENSA feed directly via mobile devices, thus helping prevent accidents involving students and the public, as well as a tool for crime prevention in the school’s area,” Jaafar said in the video.

Subang Jaya Zone 14 councilor Kamarul Hafiz said the project is a direct response to numerous complaints from residents and school authorities regarding student safety.

“SENSA provides peace of mind to parents and students as it creates a sense of awareness among motorists, making them more alert to students' presence crossing the road.”

MBSJ said SENSA, which costs approximately RM25,000 per unit, operated using solar power, in line with Subang Jaya’s aspirations as a low carbon city.

The council added that it plans to integrate License Plate Recognition (LPR) and behavioral analysis into the system to ensure faster responses to incidents.

It said these features will be rolled out in phases in high-risk schools, reinforcing its commitment to build a smarter, safer, and resilient community for all residents.
