SHAH ALAM, May 4 — Politicians in the country have been reminded to act responsibly when issuing statements to avoid sparking tensions that could undermine social harmony.
Human resources and unity executive councillor Papparaidu Veraman said differences in opinion in a democratic system are normal, but should not cross the line and lead to unnecessary polemics.
He said issues such as the Songkran celebration and the organisation of water festivals should be viewed in the context of cultural diversity and efforts to strengthen unity.
“When programmes like these are organised in other states such as Kedah, they do not become major issues. However, when implemented at the federal level, they are questioned and excessively politicised.
“Such matters do not need to be exaggerated. Let the authorities and relevant agencies, including the police and government departments, carry out their duties professionally,” he said in a statement on Facebook.
He added that politicians need not intervene in every issue to the point of creating polemics that bring no benefit, especially those related to racial unity.
All parties should avoid making statements that could cause misunderstandings and disrupt harmony among Malaysia’s multiracial society.
“Malaysia is a multiracial and multicultural country. Every celebration and cultural practice should be respected and embraced in the spirit of mutual understanding,” he said.
In this regard, he urged all parties to stop unnecessary polemics and focus on efforts to strengthen unity, rather than creating division.
