SHAH ALAM, May 1 — The Kuala Langat Pig Farmers Association has welcomed the Selangor government’s plan to help farmers transition into other sectors, but is seeking further details on compensation and the future market direction.
Its chairman, Chuwa Leng Kee, said the group wants a clearer understanding of the options available should they switch to other agricultural or livestock sectors such as cattle or goat farming.
“We are willing to transition, but we need assurance on the market. Who will be the buyers and target groups?” he told Media Selangor.
He noted that many farmers had previously invested significant capital to upgrade their facilities to modern standards.
As such, he hopes the equipment can be adapted for use with other livestock to avoid major losses.
Chuwa also pointed out that the pig farming cycle, which takes nearly a year, requires a longer transition period compared to poultry farming.
He called for sufficient time to clear existing stock and for fair compensation to ensure farmers do not lose their livelihoods.
On April 28, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state administration would carry out the decree of Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, who does not want pig farms operating in the state.
Amirudin said the state government would also address the welfare of farmers by helping them shift to alternative sources of income.
