SHAH ALAM, May 1 — The Selangor government will install safety fences and drain covers as an immediate measure to improve safety at the location where a boy fell into a drain and was swept away by strong currents in Lorong Cakera Purnama, Puncak Alam.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the swift action is important to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the area, Sinar Harian reported.

“We will look into the size, dimensions and length of the safety structures that need to be installed at the location.

“The implementation will be handled by the local authority or Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation), or MBI, and I will ask for it to be expedited,” he told the local Malay daily.

Amirudin also urged the public, especially parents, to closely monitor their children’s movements and prevent them from playing in high-risk areas.

“The public, especially parents, must be vigilant and stop children from playing in dangerous locations that could lead to loss of life."

Yesterday, the media reported that the body of a boy who had fallen into a drain in Lorong Cakera Purnama 12/27, Bandar Puncak Alam on Tuesday was found drowned after three days of search efforts.

The victim, Khairil Izani, 10, was discovered in a river near Sungai Buloh, Ijok, at about 1pm.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the search and rescue operation had entered its third day at the time of the discovery.
