SUKMA 2026: Final squad list almost ready

SHAH ALAM, Apr 28 — The final list of Selangor athletes for the Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) 2026 is in its final stages and is expected to be confirmed soon.

Selangor contingent head Abbas Azmi said preparations for the state team have reached nearly 100 per cent, having been underway since the SUKMA Games in Sarawak.

He said the list of athletes has been identified and is currently undergoing final updates before being officially announced.

“The final list of athletes has been identified and is now undergoing updates.

“It is expected to be finalised soon as the event draws closer,” he said.

He added that the consent of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, to proceed with the games has brought relief to athletes and sports associations that have been preparing diligently from the outset.

“On behalf of the athletes and sports associations, I would like to express our highest appreciation for His Royal Highness’ consent to proceed with SUKMA 2026.

“They are now more motivated and are committed to delivering their best performance for Selangor at this edition of the games,” he said.

State SUKMA 2026 contingent head Abbas Azmi says the Sultan’s decision to continue with the Games has given the team new resolve.

He said training allocations for athletes have been maintained to ensure their welfare and performance are not affected.

“The training allocation has not been reduced as it involves allowances and basic needs of the athletes.

“If the games were postponed, costs would increase, so the decision to proceed helps control expenditure,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Klang mayor said venue preparations in the district are progressing smoothly, with several key facilities having been upgraded.

“Among the venues involved are the Klang Hockey Stadium, Sultan Sulaiman Stadium for rugby, as well as the lawn bowls venue in Bayu Mas.

“Upgrading works, including turf replacement, installation of lighting and scoreboards, are being carried out according to schedule,” he said.

He added that more than RM10 million has been allocated to ensure all venues are in optimal condition.

Klang mayor Dato' Abd. Hamid Hussain says works to upgrade the SUKMA 2026 venues in the city are progressing well.

“With SUKMA taking place, we are grateful that all prepared venues can be fully utilised.

“We also express our utmost appreciation for His Royal Highness’ consent, as all preparations undertaken can now be realised,” he said.
