MB calls for swift, firm action following defamatory post against Sultan

SHAH ALAM, April 27 — The state government has strongly condemned actions insulting the Selangor royal institution and urged immediate, firm action against those involved.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the royal institution, particularly under the reign of the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj is a vital symbol of unity and harmony in a multiracial society.

“I firmly state that such vile actions are strictly prohibited in this state,” he said in a statement today.

Amirudin added that the public reaction condemning the act reflects the people’s clear stance in defending the institution.

“The response from society, which has also denounced the act, shows the people’s firm position in safeguarding the institution under the Sultan of Selangor,” he said.

In a related development, Amirudin said his political secretary Saifuddin Shafi Muhammad lodged a police report to push for an immediate investigation into the incident.

He also met Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil to convey the state government’s stance that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) should take decisive action.

“This afternoon, I met the Communications Minister to express the state government’s position that the strictest action should be taken swiftly by the MCMC,” Amirudin said.

The Menteri Besar noted that preliminary investigations found the account owner had uploaded the content before deleting the account on Facebook.

“I will remain in close contact with the ministry and the police regarding the progress of investigations by the enforcement agencies,” he said.

Amirudin also reminded all parties to use social media responsibly and avoid actions that could undermine social harmony and the Selangor Royal Institution.

Yesterday, a social media post went viral depicting an edited image of a pig in royal attire associated with the Sultan.

Following this, several state executive councillors (exco), including investment, trade and mobility exco Ng Sze Han, condemned the post and urged firm action against those responsible in accordance with the law.

Similar condemnations were also issued by housing and culture exco Datuk Borhan Aman Shah, Islamic affairs and innovation exco Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah, unity and consumers exco Dato' Rizam Ismail; youth, sports, and entrepreneurship exco Mohd Najwan Halimi, as well as human resources and poverty eradication exco Papparaidu Veraman.
