Selangor plans dual-pipe system for raw water to prevent waste

SHAH ALAM, April 25 — Selangor is planning to develop a specialised secondary piping system to carry raw water for industrial and commercial use, to prevent wasting treated water, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.

He said Malaysia relies on a single-pipe system resulting in quality treated water being used for various non-potable activities, including industrial processes and flushing toilets.

He noted that the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) is planning to separate treated and untreated water channels through distinct piping systems.

“There is no separation between domestic and commercial use. Since the supply comes from the same water treatment plants, this is clearly a form of wastage,” he said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.

Izham was responding to a question from Rajiv Rishyakaran (Harapan-Bukit Gasing) about the feasibility of separate piping systems for sewage and utility needs.

In addition to the dual-pipe plan, Izham said Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd would continue its long-term strategy to ensure stable water pressure.

Among the strategies stated were to replace aged pipes, upgrade pumphouses and reservoirs, enhance water treatment plans, and develop better connectivity for the water distribution system across various regions.

Izham also cautioned that ongoing conflicts in West Asia are expected to drive up electricity costs, which may impact the operational expenses of Air Selangor’s water treatment plants.
