SHAH ALAM, April 22 — A state government lawmaker has proposed introducing “Visit Selangor” vouchers aimed to encourage domestic tourists to visit local attractions while supporting the state’s tourism industry.

Bukit Lanjan state assemblyman Pua Pei Ling said the initiative could be funded using part of the tourism sustainability fee collected from accommodation operators in the state.

“This initiative can help stimulate domestic tourism while ensuring that the tourism sustainability fund directly benefits local tourism players,” she said during the sitting of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.

The tourism sustainability fee, introduced by the state government beginning January 1, 2026, ranges from RM2 to RM7 per room per night, depending on the type of accommodation.

A RM7 rate is imposed on five-star hotels, RM5 for four-star hotels, RM3 for three-star hotels, and RM2 for homestays or Airbnb.

Funds collected are channelled towards tourism development, environmental conservation, and promotional initiatives in the state.

Pua also suggested that Tourism Selangor focus its promotional efforts on key Asian markets, including China, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, and India, which are among the largest sources of visitors to the state.

Meanwhile, she also emphasised the importance of accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of the state’s efforts to strengthen economic resilience and support its net-zero emissions target by 2050.

"The government could introduce grants or incentives for rural local authorities and petrol station operators to install EV charging stations,” Pua said, while calling for faster approval processes for private EV charger installations.

Additionally, she suggested that the state government integrate the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package with an emergency employment action plan to help workers affected by layoffs.

"The establishment of reskilling and upskilling centres for retrenched manufacturing workers, as well as a fast-track training pathway through state training centres such as the Selangor Technical Development Centre, could be considered.

"The centres could offer three-month training courses linked directly to job placement, particularly when new investors in sectors such as electronics and electrical enter Selangor," Pua said.
