KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6 — The police have arrested political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Chegu Bard, last night to assist in an investigation into a speech containing alleged seditious elements and unsubstantiated claims about the royal institution.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar stated the viral video was detected on Thursday (September 4) in a post on the TikTok account ‘Edume @4mrankiamat’, featuring Chegu Bard allegedly delivering a speech with seditious undertones.
“An investigation into the viral video was conducted by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit of the D5 Division, Bukit Aman CID, immediately after a police report was received.
“On September 5 at approximately 10.25pm, the police arrested the 47-year-old man, believed to be the speaker in the said video, to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement today.
The police are investigating the case under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with a remand application for the suspect expected today.
Kumar concluded with a firm warning of uncompromising action for anyone intentionally making or spreading seditious statements that cause public alarm and disrupt social harmony.
