No damage or casualties from Segamat tremor, authorities say

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 27 — A 3.2-magnitude earthquake that shook Segamat this morning has been confirmed by the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) as an aftershock of the 4.8 magnitude quake on Sunday.

MetMalaysia director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the tremor occurred at 8.59am at a depth of 10km, with its epicentre about 18km south of Segamat in the Mersing Fault Zone.

“Tremors were also felt in parts of Johor and southern Pahang,” he said, adding that the weak quake posed no threat to public safety.

MetMalaysia will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates, and urged the public to seek verified information through its website, myCuaca mobile app, social media channels, and 1300-221-638 hotline.

No damage or casualties were reported.

Segamat District Disaster Management Committee chairman Mohd Ezzuddin Sanusi said: “MetMalaysia is monitoring the situation, while security authorities and relevant agencies are on watch to ensure conditions in Segamat remain safe, especially for the public.

“People are advised to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information, and obtain the latest updates through official channels such as MetMalaysia and government agencies,” he said in a statement.

He urged the public to report any emergency incidents to the authorities, saying the Segamat District Disaster Management Committee will provide regular updates to ensure community safety and well-being.

Johor executive councillor for public works, transport, infrastructure and communications Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the state government has initiated immediate monitoring of all key facilities, including bridges, roads and dams.

“The Johor government, through technical agencies such as the Public Works Department, the Irrigation and Drainage Department, and the Johor Water Regulatory Body, will continue to monitor the condition of bridges, roads, dams and other key facilities to ensure they are all safe and in good condition,” he said.

“Petronas will also be submitting reports on the condition of their assets and facilities within the affected radius. Let us all pray we will always be protected from any disaster,” he said.

He also advised the public to stay away from high-rise buildings and their surrounding areas for the time being and be alert to any instructions from the authorities, as the safety of people must be the top priority.

On Sunday, MetMalaysia confirmed that a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck Segamat at 6.13am, followed by a second tremor at 9am in Yong Peng, about 28km northwest of Kluang, registering a magnitude of 2.8 at a depth of 10km.
