SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 — Selangor is set to host the first branch of the National Subfertility Centre, said state executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari.
She said the Selangor government will back the initiative by granting planning permits through the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) for the construction of the centre.
“The subfertility centre will be developed in Seksyen 17, Shah Alam, and will be a facility not just for Selangor residents, but also couples from all over the country, especially in the central zone,” she said after officiating the Selangor State Population Seminar at the Ideal Convention Centre here today.
Meanwhile, Hulu Kelang state constituency coordinator Juwairiya Zulkifli said the centre would be the first of its kind in Malaysia and is distinct from the three existing fertility clinics under the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Penang.
“The prices offered are much lower than market rates, as a government initiative. We support this and want to help couples who need fertility treatments, that’s why the treatment is offered at subsidised rates.
“The centre functions as a hospital with a larger capacity, expert services, and the latest medical technology facilities. It is expected to decrease waiting time for treatment, which is currently lengthy due to limited space and experts,” Juwairiya said.
She added that the project, with a funding of RM171 million, was approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) and is set to be operational by 2030.
She said the LPPKN also offers subsidies on intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatments worth RM4,000 for 3,000 couples annually.
“So far, 35 mothers have successfully given birth under the programme. The success rate is nearly the same as a private hospital’s, but at a lower price,” Juwairiya said.
