SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 — Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) is actively integrating artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions to enhance the safety and reliability of water for consumers.

Its chief executive officer, Adam Saffian Ghazali, said this is part of the company’s Trust Our Tap 2028 plan, a long-term initiative to ensure a continuous supply of clean and safe drinking water straight from the tap.

He said AI technology will monitor, analyse, and predict the quality of raw water from rivers before it is treated at Selangor's 34 water treatment plants WTPs.

“This technology can detect changes in water quality parameters, including the presence of contaminants, and identify shifts that require more effective interventions,” he added.

Adam Saffian said Air Selangor constantly monitors the quality of water in all its WTPs, adding that drinking water supplied by the company has now reached a compliance rate of 99.94 per cent.

“This achievement is based on more than 111,000 analyses of treated water samples conducted by the Health Ministry (MOH) and Air Selangor from the distribution system in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya.

“This shows that the water supplied to consumers meets the highest compliance standards set by the National Drinking Water Quality Standards under MOH.”

He added that Air Selangor aims to ensure compliance of potable water quality across the entire water supply network progressively by 2028.

Adam Saffian said today, Selangor ranks among the top three under MOH's Quality Assurance Programme, alongside Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

“In fact, as of June, Air Selangor has achieved full compliance with five key parameters, including E. coli, combined E. coli and free chlorine residual, turbidity, and aluminium content."

Tackling climate change, urbanisation

Adam Saffian said Air Selangor is also developing long-term holistic measures to prepare for climate change, which he warned could pose a threat to water sources.

"This is why we are working together with the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) to protect our water sources through the implementation of the Zero Discharge Policy."

To meet the growing demand for clean water amid rapid urbanisation, Adam Saffian said Air Selangor is implementing a comprehensive multi-source water supply strategy to enhance system resilience and long-term preparedness.

This strategy includes the development of new WTPS like the Sungai Rasau Phase 1, Sungai Rasau Phase 2, Labohan Dagang Phase 2 and Langat 2 Phase 2.

“We also develop off-river storage, as well as water recycling and desalination plants, particularly in strategic industrial areas. As of December 31, 2024, the water reserve margin increased to 18.6 percent, up from 15.34 percent the previous year, with a target of 20 percent by 2030,” he said.

Adam Saffian said consumers also have a crucial role to play in ensuring water supply remains clean.

He said residents of landed properties should regularly inspect and maintain their internal plumbing and clean their water tanks to prevent contamination.

“For high-rise residences, users should promptly report any signs of leaks, contamination, or plumbing issues to building management. Immediate action can prevent further damage and ensure the water supply remains safe."
