KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — The upcoming Asean Energy Business Forum (AEBF 2025) will focus on regional energy integration, sustainable financing, and a just and inclusive energy transition, strengthening Malaysia’s position as a regional leader in clean energy investment, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said AEBF 2025, scheduled to be held from October 15 to 17, is expected to gather 1,500 delegates comprising stakeholders and players from the Asean energy industry, as well as international dialogue partners, to discuss the holistic development of the energy sector.
“Malaysia will leverage this forum to highlight investment opportunities in renewable energy (RE), low-carbon technology, smart grids and energy storage,” he said during the question-and-answer session.
He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad (BN-Simpang Renggam) on the ministry’s strategy in making the Asean Energy Forum 2025 a key platform to attract high-impact green investment and strengthen Malaysia’s position as a regional clean energy hub.
In driving the energy transition in Southeast Asia, Akmal Nasrullah said, host Malaysia views AEBF 2025 as the best platform to accelerate efforts towards establishing the Asean Power Grid, enhancing energy resilience, ensuring security of electricity supply, and promoting integrated renewable energy in the region.
In addition, AEBF 2025 will serve as a strong platform for Malaysia to push the energy transition agenda at the 47th Asean Summit here from October 26 to 28, in turn supporting Asean countries’ efforts to become a green electricity hub as well as Malaysia’s aspiration to achieve 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050.
Akmal Nasrullah said Malaysia has a diverse range of energy resources, which is an advantage in attracting investment into the RE industry.
“When we launched the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), it opened opportunities for Malaysia to attract investments that require renewable energy, and as a result, many announcements made by the government today show investments flowing in due to their interest in our efforts towards RE,” he said.
He was responding to a supplementary question from Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan (PN-Merbok) on Malaysia’s advantages over other Asean countries in drawing the interest of both domestic and international investors to the energy industry.
