SHAH ALAM, Aug 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today hit back at claims by the opposition that the government has “done nothing” to address governance, education, and economic reforms since the formation of the Madani Government.
When tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) at Dewan Negara, Anwar called the accusation a “blatant lie” and provided a detailed list of reforms achieved since he assumed leadership of the government.
Anwar said constructive criticism is welcome but warned against baseless claims and using religion as a political weapon.
“I can accept if you say what we’ve done is not enough, or if certain measures are unwise. I can also accept if you propose other initiatives, but to deny and suggest that nothing has been done is false. That is outright deception,” he said.
Among the reforms Anwar cited were putting an end to direct negotiations for large-scale projects, resulting in billions saved through open tender processes.
On education, Anwar highlighted the government’s efforts to uplift dilapidated schools, saying that in 2023 alone, 1,177 schools were repaired — the most on record within such a short period.
“In the past, an average of 20 to 40 new schools were built each year. Under the Madani Government, 102 new schools have been built,” he said.
Elaborating, he reminded opposition lawmakers to frame their debates in fact and principle instead of rhetoric.
“Some in debates, whether in Parliament or outside, use religious verses as a shield to accuse us of doing nothing.
“But when the record shows reforms already implemented, then to deny this just for political gain, I strongly object. To use the Quran in this manner is unacceptable,” he said.
Anwar also pointed to the government’s ongoing efforts in crime prevention and governance reforms, highlighting that tough action was being taken against influential figures despite the high risks involved.
“It is not easy to fight crime. Each time a prominent figure is targeted, they have strong backing and funds, but we must take that risk to save the nation.
“This gives real meaning to the Quran’s call for us to cleanse our country from corruption,” he said.
Anwar also urged Dewan Negara members to hold the government accountable via reasoned debate and verified data.
