Segamat quake: No need to worry, gas pipelines unaffected

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 24 — The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has advised the public not to worry about the two low-magnitude earthquakes that hit Johor today.

Its director-general, Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, said the department will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on the earthquake as well as the latest weather conditions.

“Information can be obtained on our official website, the myCuaca app, and social media channels. Queries can be made through the hotline 1300-22-1638,” he said in a statement today.

Hisham said analysis done by the department revealed that two earthquakes occurred — the first a 4.1-magnitude quake in Segamat at 6.13am and the second a 2.8-magnitude tremor in Yong Peng, about 28km northwest of Kluang, Johor, which is located along the Mersing Fault Zone area.

“The quake was also felt in certain areas around Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and southern Pahang and was detected by Indonesia’s Badan Meteorologi, Kimatologi dan Geofisika (BMKG),” he added.

The Segamat police has received three reports on property damage following the earthquakes so far. District police chief Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah however said there was no report involving injuries or casualties.

He advised the public to report any emergency incident to the nearest polcie station or the Segamat district police headquarters at 07-932422.

Petronas Gas says pipelines unaffected

Meanwhile, Petronas Gas Bhd (PGB) confirmed that all pipeline infrastructure and facilities within the affected region remain fully secure and operational following the minor earthquake.

“Upon receiving notification of the tremor, our technical and regional teams promptly implemented standard safety protocols that are already in place for such events across the southern region,” the oil and gas company said in a statement today.

As part of these established procedures, PGB said checks were carried out at the Segamat Compressor Station, Segamat Control Station, and along the relevant pipeline right-of-way.

No abnormalities or disruptions were detected, it said.

“Live monitoring through our supervisory control and data acquisition system also confirmed that pressure levels and operational parameters remain stable,” it said.

PGB said it is maintaining active communication with the relevant local authorities and MetMalaysia for ongoing updates.

“We will continue to prioritise the safety of the public and our operations as we carry out close surveillance, standing ready to respond should conditions evolve,” it added.

The Johor government had advised the public to stay away from unsafe structures and remain alert to instructions from the authorities following the weak earthquake.
