MBDK expedites retention pond repairs to greatly reduce Klang Utama flash floods

SHAH ALAM, Aug 23 — The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) has accelerated repair works on the damaged fencing and drains of the Sungai Batu 50 retention pond in Taman Klang Utama to ensure flash flood issues can be addressed for the safety of affected residents.

According to MBDK Councillor Ngian Yok Moi, the repair works, which began on June 16, also involve upgrading the pump system from manual to automatic with a RM111,000 allocation. Its progress has now reached 20 per cent.

The project is scheduled for full completion by mid-October and will benefit thousands of residents. MBDK also maintains the pond via the Environmental Services Department (JPP), which carries out cleaning works in collaboration with KDEB Waste Management.

She noted that the maintenance of the flood control pumps in Taman Mutiara, Bukit Raja, and Taman Klang Utama has been ongoing since February and is expected to be completed in 2027.

The works, with a RM166,000 allocation, cover pump accessory repairs, routine maintenance, rubbish trap cleaning, and unforeseen works.

“Since the phased drain maintenance and cleaning works were implemented, floodwaters no longer enter residents’ homes," Ngian said.

Flash flooding has been a significant issue frequently raised by residents of Taman Klang Utama. In response, MBDK continues to upgrade retention pond infrastructure, including the installation of auto-pumps and more efficient water control systems.

Meanwhile, Klang Utama Residents’ Association chairman Tan Poh Hock said that although flash floods still occur, they are not as severe as before since MBDK improved the existing drainage system.

“Previously, the floods would enter homes, but since continuous phased upgrading works have been carried out, flooding only reaches ankle level and is confined to the surrounding roads, without entering residents’ houses,” he said.
