Selangor MMEA detains illegally anchored cargo ship

SHAH ALAM, Aug 22 — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Selangor branch detained a barter trade cargo ship that was anchored without permission in the country’s waters yesterday.

Its director Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the cargo ship was detained at 12.30pm at 0.6 nautical miles southwest of Sementa near here.

He said the vessel’s captain and 14 crew members, all Indonesian nationals, were aged between 36 and 56 and possessed valid identification documents.

“The vessel’s captain failed to produce any permit to anchor and is suspected to have committed an offence under Section 491B(1)(l) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for docking without permission from the director-general of the Malaysian Marine Department.

“A detention order was issued on the vessel, while the captain and second engineer of the ship were taken to the state MMEA office,” he said in a statement today.

Muhaimin said the MMEA would take appropriate action against any party that violates the country’s maritime laws.
