SHAH ALAM, Aug 21 — The Selangor Social Welfare Department (JKM) can perform spot checks on childcare centres (taska) within 24 hours of receiving a complaint, said its director Azmir Kassim.

He added that JKM officers have the authority to visit taska without notice to ensure children’s safety and welfare.

“If there is a complaint, JKM officers may perform surprise visits within 24 hours to assess the situation and take appropriate action.

“Surprise visits would cover checks on the aspects of safety, cleanliness, adherence to registration conditions, the number of minders, and how the children are treated,” he said.

In his speech at Selangor Taska Day, held at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Building recently, Azmir emphasised that every taska must be equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras before it starts operating, as detailed in the safety guidelines.

He added that compliance is boosted via reminders to operators, with notices sent six months before any taska’s lease is up. Taska licences must be renewed every five years.

“Selangor JKM works closely with the Fire and Rescue Department, Health Ministry, and local authorities to ensure all taska abide by cleanliness, health, and premises approval rules,” Azmir said.
