SHAH ALAM, Aug 20 — A total of 3,190 undocumented migrants have been detained in 414 enforcement operations across Selangor over the past seven months, the New Straits Times reported.
State Immigration director Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin said the Petaling district recorded the highest number of arrests with 2,158 detainees, followed by Klang (617) and Hulu Langat (193).
Within the same period, 941 undocumented migrants were successfully prosecuted in court.
“The largest group comprised Indonesians, with 387 individuals, followed by Bangladeshis (245) and Indians (114).
“Most offences involved overstaying as well as not possessing a valid pass or permit,” he was quoted as saying during a media engagement session here yesterday.
Enforcement action was also taken against 22 employers for harbouring undocumented migrants under Section 56(1)(l) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
So far, 1,030 undocumented migrants have been deported after documentation and embassy coordination processes were completed.
“Statistics from Selangor Immigration also show that the majority of detainees at the Semenyih Immigration Depot were Myanmar nationals, with 655 individuals, followed by Bangladeshis (123), Indonesians (98), Indians (35), Pakistanis (20) and others (46),” Khairrul said.
He added that enforcement efforts will continue against foreigners in the state who breach immigration laws.
