SHAH ALAM, Aug 18 — A total of 313 compounds have been issued since 2016 to address illegal dumpsites and unauthorised land reclamation in Kampung Sri Sentosa and Kampung Sri Aman in Ijok, Kuala Selangor.

The Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) Corporate, Tourism and Public Communications Unit said that in the same period, 145 vehicles were seized and 24 notices issued, with the highest number of confiscations in 2023.

“From 2008, the MPKS has issued oral warnings and compound notices to individuals and those involved in illegal land reclamation and dumpsites.

In 2016, the MPKS took more drastic steps by shuttering illegal dumpsites that were reported, and dug drains to prevent vehicles from entering those areas.

“Gates and illegal huts built in the area were also torn down,” it said in a statement to Media Selangor.

The unit said the Kuala Selangor District and Land Office identified 51 problematic landlots, with action taken against the landowners.

It added that the state government had issued orders to better coordinate inter-agency enforcement action through the Selangor Land and Mines Office.

“As part of this action, the MPKS established the Illegal Waste Management Special Officers Committee to monitor the execution of the order,” it said.

To ensure a long-term solution, the MPKS has suggested several improvements, including by holding meetings with landowners and implementing integrated operations.

Warning signs and public broadcasts will also be distributed, it said, including by incentivising whistleblowers to encourage the people to report illegal dumping.

“Strict, continuous action will be taken to ensure cleanliness and the people’s well-being. The MPKS urges the people to come forward with information if there is illegal waste dumping in their area,” it said.

On August 15, the Selangor Land and Mines Office seized four units of heavy machinery in Kampung Sri Sentosa, Ijok.

A nine-hour integrated operation with various agencies was undertaken on a privately owned landlot of about 40ha, which has been an illegal dumpsite for over nine years.
