MB visits family of late Syamsul Haris, calls for thorough investigation

SEMENYIH, Aug 15 — The state government hopes that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out into the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said they are also prepared to provide full assistance to the victim’s family to ensure that justice is upheld.

“Any form of bullying, whether physical or non-physical, must be taken seriously by all parties. In this case, indications have suggested physical contact, something that is utterly unacceptable and must be eradicated with the utmost firmness,” he said.

Amirudin was speaking to the press after visiting the deceased's family at their residence in Taman Pelangi Semenyih today.

Earlier, it was reported that Syamsul, 22, passed away at the Kota Tinggi Hospital in Johor on July 28.

The computer science (cyber security) undergraduate is believed to have died while undergoing training at the Combat Inoculation Range of the Army Basic Training Centre (Pulada) in Johor.

Meanwhile, the deceased's family lawyer Datuk Naran Singh said the Shah Alam High Court will hear an application on Tuesday (August 19) to exhume his remains.

The application includes a request for a second post-mortem and an inquest into Syamsul's death.

“The family is dissatisfied with the initial report stating there was no element of foul play, despite the presence of physical injuries on the victim’s body. Besides raising suspicion, the victim’s mother was also not allowed to see and bathe her son’s remains,” he told the press.

Naran added that the application calls for the second post-mortem to be carried out by a forensic specialist from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, which is to be witnessed by former forensic pathologist Datuk Dr Bhupinder Singh and himself to ensure the investigation's transparency.

In addition, the application also requests that Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department Director Datuk M. Kumar appoint a new team from the Bukit Aman Police Headquarters to take over the investigation from the current investigating officer.
