KLANG, Aug 15 — The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) is stepping up enforcement, closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring, and collaboration with local fishermen as part of efforts to keep Sungai Klang clean and picturesque.

Klang Mayor Dato’ Abd Hamid Hussain said the initiatives not only ensure a cleaner river but also help reduce damage to fishing boats.

“Cleaning Sungai Klang is challenging, so we have begun working with residents, especially fishermen, by organising river clean-up programmes.

“When they are not out at sea, we carry out floating waste collection activities together. This initiative began in June and will continue from time to time,” he told Media Selangor.

Hamid said aside from working with fishermen, MBDK is also tightening enforcement on land by installing mobile CCTV cameras and seizing vehicles caught illegally dumping waste.

He said with rubbish often being dumped directly into Sungai Klang, stricter control on land could help reduce the amount of waste ending up in the water.

“So far, we have 10 mobile CCTVs and plan to add 30 more at illegal dumping hotspots. Once  cases are resolved, the cameras will be moved to other locations.

“Since June, a total of 23 lorries have been seized for illegal dumping, and the owners are required to pay a fine before they can reclaim their vehicles,” he said.
