Anwar condemns ‘extreme’ attack on Rafizi’s son

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today opened the Dewan Rakyat sitting by condemning the attack on Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli’s son, describing it as an “extreme” and deeply troubling act.

Anwar said he had raised the matter with Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, stressing the need for a full and thorough investigation.

“There is an increasingly extreme culture in our country, from bullying, where some cases have led to deaths, to now an attack on the Pandan MP’s son.

“I have contacted the home minister and IGP to ensure a complete investigation. This culture is deeply worrying, and I have been assured that immediate action will be taken to put a stop to this evil act,” he told the House at the start of this morning’s session.

Yesterday, Rafizi said that at 1.45pm, a man grabbed his 12-year-old son and jabbed him with a syringe as his wife and child were getting into their car to leave a mall in Putrajaya.

He claimed the assault involved two men on a motorcycle, clad in black attire and helmets.

The former Cabinet member claimed the assault was a deliberate warning aimed at silencing him, but vowed he will “not bow to any threat” and will continue his duties as usual.

Rafizi’s son was taken to hospital for treatment.

Saifuddin also assured yesterday that investigations will be conducted fairly and in accordance with the law, without any influence from anyone’s status or background.

Several MPs have since taken to social media to condemn the attack.
