KUALA SELANGOR, Aug 13 — Education grounded in wasatiyyah (moderation) is the foundation for building a peaceful, civilised, and forward-looking society, said Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.
The concept not only produces academically excellent students but also nurtures a generation rich in humanitarian values, tolerance, and harmony.
“Wasatiyyah education shapes pupils with noble character, rational thinking, a rejection of ghuluw (extremism), and the cultivation of compassion in social interactions.
“This is the recipe for producing an outstanding generation capable of contributing to the nation’s well-being,” he said during the opening of the second edition of the Wasatiyyah and Countering Extremism Seminar at the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC) today.
Amirudin added that the principle of wasatiyyah balances divine revelation and reason, and upholds values like cleanliness, justice, orderliness, trust, consultation (syura), and human dignity.
“Selangor rejects modernisation that erodes Islamic identity, yet at the same time rejects rigid thinking that hinders progress,” he said.
The seminar, organised by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), brought together 300 teachers from government and private religious schools to discuss strategies to counter extremism, preserve interfaith harmony, and cultivate moderation in educational institutions.
It also featured the launch of Selangor Bertadabbur 2025, which focuses on tadabbur (deep reflection) on Surah Al-Mulk at 10 to 15 selected mosques across the state.
