Abandoned Morib project needs the right developer — MB

BANTING, Aug 13 — The abandoned Rumah Selangorku housing project in Morib needs saving, but Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari says it is far from simple, reported The Star.

“When a project is abandoned, it often involves a ‘white knight’ — a company willing and able to take over — but not all companies have the capacity to do so,” he said, adding that the Morib project situation is complex as it needs a comprehensive solution from the state government.

He said it isn’t just a matter of telling someone to complete the project.

“The original developer has gone bankrupt, disappeared. Finding a developer with the financial capability and willingness to manage all the associated issues is proving to be difficult.

“Our focus now is to find a developer who is willing to take over and complete the project.”

Importantly, any willing company has to consider that some homebuyers of the project have financial commitments with the bank and have paid deposits, Amirudin said, adding: “If a new company wants to take over but isn’t willing to bear the full burden, including the loss of deposits, that wouldn’t be fair either.”

He said the land is owned by Permodalan Nasional Bhd, and that Selangor is working on a solution.

“This will take time to properly address,” Amirudin said after handing over keys to Idaman Bukit Jelutong homeowners recently.

The project, located near Kampung Tali Air in Kuala Langat, was supposed to have been completed in 2020.

Previous media reports highlighted the woes of the 500 buyers of the project who had been left hanging.
